Marie and the Beads

March 2018

Written and Illustrated by: Merissa Mayhew

A children's book about Métis heritage

Marie moves to a new home with her family, where she helps build a house with neighbours, picks strawberries with her dog Pascal, and learns the art of beading special to her Métis heritage.

This book was one of three created for a project at the Assiniboine Community College.  Each story was developed around the culture and stories of some of the different Indigenous groups in southern Manitoba.  With in-depth research, discussion with elders, and project management, Marie and the Beads came to life in the three months I had to develop it.
